Hands and voices: Democracy Day from a Saturday classroom in Manassas
15 September is the International Day of Democracy. The 2026 theme is about raising hands and voices — people taking part in the decisions that shape their lives, not waiting for someone else to speak for them.
That is the whole point of CAIRN. We are not a distant think tank. We are a community research network based in Manassas, Virginia. The people who live with a problem — a learning gap, a public form that does not make sense, a job search after military service — should also help study it, test tools, and publish what they find.
What we are doing here
Saturday School tutoring is underway at Intelligent Office in Manassas, with online seats as well. Human tutors plus Khanmigo. Twelve seats in this cycle, from 12 September through 31 October. This is week two.
The CAIRN Think Tank is a 90-day studio. Fellows pick a local problem, use AI as an assistant, and write a short public brief. The next breakthrough may not come from a lab. It may come from a Saturday classroom.
Yesterday we started a draft of the Veterans AI Next Move Summit — a free session for veterans, military spouses, and transitioning service members. Date still to be announced. If that is your community, write staff@gsa-cairn.org and get on the interest list.
Hispanic Heritage Month also starts today
15 September is the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. Our tutoring and research work has to be useful in more than one language and for families who are new to local systems. If you want a Saturday seat, or you want to help as a bilingual tutor, email staff@gsa-cairn.org.
A small ask
Do not take our word for big global numbers. Come see the work. Read a brief. Sit in on a Saturday session. Ask a hard question about AI and whether it actually helps the person in front of us.
